The first ever England cap won by a West Bromwich Albion player: Bob Roberts's purple England v Scotland international 1887 inscribed 1887-1888 This match was played 19th March 1887 at Blackburn Rovers's Leamington Road ground. Simon Wright in his 2006 book West Brom's Cult Heroes informs us that Roberts was so proud of winning his first England cap that he wore it in every subsequent match that he played. Bob Roberts (1859-1929) was known as 'Long Bob' or 'The Prince of Goalkeepers'. He was born and bred in West Bromwich and spent the majority of his career with the Baggies, having just single season spells with Sunderland Albion and Aston Villa.
