Two original 16mm horse racing films: the 1931 Grand National and the 1950 Derby, the Grand National film in a can with a duration of 11 minutes, the Derby film 3 minutes 35 seconds, the reel in its original paper box; both films have been copied to DVD are available as part of the lot (4) This superb Grand National black and white film is presented by 'The Pathe Gazette, and shows for 11 minutes. ''...The race is over 30 obstacles and is worth ?9,310 to the winner.'' This silent film begins with a panoramic view of hundreds of spectators watching the parade ring, all the contenders are lead by. We follow them all onto the course. ''...After breaking the tapes once, they got away to a good start'' We are shown both starts. ''...Only 'slow-motion' can adequately reveal the beautiful sight of the huge ''field'' taking the first jump.'' The course is lined by spectators at least four deep. ''...falls were few from the first jump until 'Becher's''' We see the field jumping the 'Canal Turn' and 'Valentine's Brook' and many parts of the film are shown in very revealing slow-motion action. ''...Over the 'Water Jump' - and then off for the second circuit.'' The stands are absolutely packed with race-goers. ''...Backers of 'Easter hero' saw their money on the floor - 2nd time around.'' We see the whole gamut of triumph and tragedy as the story of the race unfurls. ''...'Grackle' - favourite last year - wins at fifth attempt in record time...9 mins. 32 secs.'' We see horse and rider being lead into the winner's enclosure by a police rider and throngs of applauding enthusiasts. The film includes footage showing at least 16 of the fences including spectacular successes and falls. The quality of the film is extremely good, steady and excellently edited. Robert Lyall riding ''Grakle'' won the 1931 Grand National followed by 1929 winner ''Gregalach'' who couldn't really have had larger odds than when he won from 100-1 two years earlier, with him this time starting the race at 25-1. ''Annandale'' finished third followed by ''Rhyticere'' as nine from forty-three finished. The 1931 also featured it's second foreign horse run as ''Gyi Lovam'' from Czechoslovakia as it was then raced, fell, was remounted and then fell again. ''Gyi Lovam'' was the first foreign horse to race since 1868 when ''Buszke'' from Hungary entered the National but also did not complete the course. This fine, black and white Derby film is presented by Clapham Park Film Studios Ltd. With Photography and Direction by J.S.Frieze. We see the King and Queen arrive and packed grandstands. We see bets being paced and the line-up for the start followed by the race around 'Tattenham Corner'. ''The Favourite Wins! The film is in excellent condition. not illustrated
