The autograph of the great mid-19th century racing reformer Lord George Bentinck, signature in ink, a cut-out from an autographed manuscript letter; sold together with a related Racing Calendar newspaper issued 9th July 1844 (2) Lord George Bentinck (1802-1848) was an important administrator of racing who did much to improve the honesty and morality of the sport. His most notable campaign was the successful disqualification of the 1844 Derby winner 'Running Rein' who Bentinck successfully proved was an older horse running under a false identity. This lot contains a Racing Calendar newspaper from July 1844 which leads on the front page with news of a Testimonial to Lord George Bentinck inviting Noblemen & Gentlemen subscribers (up to ?25) ''interested in upholding the character and prosperity of horse racing''. Benjamin Disraeli famously described Bentinck, the younger brother of the 4th Duke of Portland, and MP for King's Lynn, as ''Lord Paramount of the Turf''.
