A collection of seven original press photographer's glass negative plates relating to the inquest following the Bolton F.A. Cup tie disaster 9th March 1946, 5 by 3 1/2in. accompanied by same-sized b&w prints in original waxed paper slip cases, each with a typescript caption, subjects comprising i, ii & iii) relatives of spectators who died arriving at the opening of the inquest 11th March 1946; iv) Mr J.H. Sawyer, Coroner for Wigan, appointed Deputy for the inquest 11th March 1946, on account of the fact that the Bolton Coroner Mr Harold Fairbrothers was also Bolton Wanderers FC's Honorary Solicitor; v, vi & vii) three dated 1st April 1946 of witnesses summoned to appear before the inquest, comprising P.C. Jones, Fred Smith (an engine driver) and W.F. Paine (a L.M.S. inspector); together with an eighth glass negative of two unidentified footballers; sold together with an old period sepia-toned mounted photograph of the St Marks School football team from Bolton that won the Stanley Shield in 1902-03 As a result of massive over crowding within the ground, 33 people died in what was the worst stadium disaster in the history of football. Included in this lot are scans from The Times Digital Library of reports of these events.
