United's opponents was a European XI selected by the Frenchman himself. The game raised ?47,000 for each of the Munich victims' families. There was criticism, however, that Eric Cantona's recouped ?90,000 of expenses directly from the Testimonial Fund and not from Club coffers. Jordi Cruyff joined Manchester United from Barcelona in August 1996 for a fee of ?1.4 million. He made his debut in the opening game of the 1996-97 season against Wimbledon, a match remembered for David Beckham's goal scored from within his own half. However, a series of injuries restricted his first team appearances and led to him losing his place and he was loaned to Celta Vigo in 1999. In all the son of Dutch legend Johan Cruyff made just 34 starts between 1996 and 2000, scoring 8 goals. He was transferred to Alaves where he picked up a UEFA Cup runners-up medal in the epic match v Liverpool.
