An impressive large silver goblet presented as the trophy for the Birkenhead Cricket Club Quoiting Handicap Subscription Challenge Cup won by T.W. Birkenhead Park was designed by Joseph (later Sir Joseph) Paxton in 1843 and officially opened in 1847, and acknowledged to be the first publicly funded urban park in Great Britain, and the forerunner of the 'parks movement' at home and abroad, most notably Frederick Olmsted's design for Central Park in New York City. Two cricket clubs had permanent premises in Birkenhead Park, and other sports were conducted including quoits. In 2004 the Park secured an ?11million grant, the majority from the Heritage Lottery Fund, for restoration projects.
