Neil Leifer (photographer born 1942) MUHAMMAD ALI V SONNY LISTON I: ''THE PHANTOM PUNCH'', MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA, 25 FEBRUARY 1964 perhaps the most famous image in boxing sports photography, depicting Ali standing over Liston and yelling at him to ''get up and fight'', a colour photographic print, small version, numbered 86 of 350, signed to the lower margin in ink by Neil Leifer, mounted together with the signature of Muhammad Ali on white card and with printed message ''With Best Wishes'', the image 26 by 25cm., 10 1/4 by 10in., framed & glazed; sold together with a certificate of authenticity signed by Thomas Hauser 12 February 1996; and a later letter of authenticity signed by Thomas Hauser and dated 9 March 2007 confirming that the Ali's signature mounted together with print No.86 was signed in his presence (3) The blow that ended the match became known as ''the phantom punch,'' so named because most people at ringside did not see it. Even Ali was unsure as to whether or not the punch connected, as footage from the event shows Ali asking his entourage ''Did I hit him?'' after the match. appendix Neil Leifer photographic prints lots 682 to 685 Neil Leifer was born in New York City in 1942. He is generally considered to be the greatest sports photographer in the world whose work has appeared chiefly in Sports Illustrated and Time magazines. Leifer collaborated with the noted author Thomas Hauser on a book about Muhammad Ali entitled Memories. Hauser supplied the text and Leifer the photographs for this fine work. As part of this project a series of limited edition photographic prints were produced, each image signed by Muhammad Ali and by Neil Leifer.
