Darwin (Bernard) The Golf Courses of the British Isles, illustrated with plates after paintings by Harry Rountree, original decorative green cloth, first edition, Duckworth & Co., London, 1910 appendix The golfing library of Sir Peter Allen (1905-1993) Lots 544 to 555 A fanatic golfer Sir Peter Allen wrote a number of seminal books on golf, most notably, 'Famous Fairways' (1968), 'Play the Best Courses' (1973) and 'The Sunley Book of Royal Golf': The Story of Royal Golfers, Royal Clubs and Royal Courses' (1989). The Chairman of the UK Chemical giant ICI from 1968-71, he was a member of numerous golf clubs around the world, including West Byfleet, Woking, Walton Heath, Sandiway, Kanawaki (Montreal), the R&A at St Andrews, Rye, Royal St George's, The Royal Cinque Ports, Oxford and Cambridge Golfing Society and Pine Valley. Significantly, Sir Peter was also the first overseas member of the Augusta National. He knew many of the golfing personalities of his day and inspired a number to take up golf writing, including William Shelley, Charles Yates (the 1938 Masters Amateur Champion) and, of course, Arnold Palmer, who dedicated his scrapbook to Allen.
