An autographed typescript essay titled 'Maracana ano 1950 mementos inolvidables' being the reminiscences of the Uruguayan 1950 World Cup winner Juan Alberto Schiaffino, two pages with various manuscript corrections, in Spanish, signed in ink by Schiaffino at the bottom of page 2, and further signed and authenticated by the Uruguayan 1950 World Cup winner to the reverse This essay was written by Juan Alberto Schiaffino, the scorer of Uruguay's first goal in the World Cup finals decider of 1950, and represents his personal memories of the occasion. Schiaffino was born in Montevideo in 1925. He was one of the best players in the World, and represented both Uruguay and Italy at international level during a 9 year career. He played for Penarol from 1943 and was a wonderfully gifted footballer, possessing intelligence and consummate skills. He first appeared on the international stage in the 1949 South American Championships. The highlight of his career was winning the gold medal at the 1950 World Cup, scoring five goals in the tournament. He also played in the 1954 World Cup, scoring two further goals, including one in the 4-2 win over England. In 1954 he continued his career in Europe, having been signed by Milan, which under the then Italian rules made him eligible to play for Italy. He ended his career at Roma, before returning to Uruguay to become both a club and, in 1975, an international team manager.
