Alan Ball's red England No.7 spare jersey from the 1966 World Cup final, long-sleeved, three-lions badge; sold with a signed letter of provenance (2)
£7,000 - £10,000
Alan Ball's red England No.7 spare jersey from the 1966 World Cup final, long-sleeved, three-lions badge; sold with a signed letter of provenance (2) Provenance: This jersey was sold at Christie's Glasgow on 20th June 1998 as lot 132. It is offered with the signed letter of provenance from the vendor at that time confirming the provenance account printed in the Catalogue to be true. The Christie's catalogue stated 'the shirt was given to the vendor by his aunt's boyfriend the day after the World Cup final took place on 30th July 1966. According to the vendor, his aunt's boyfriend was Sid Brown who, it is believed, was the coach driver for the England party between the Hendon Hall Hotel and Wembley Stadium during the 1966 finals.' At the time of the 1998 auction Christie's were unable to confirm if this was Alan Ball's match-worn jersey or his spare issue. Research in subsequent years has established that Alan Ball swapped his match-worn jersey with his England team-mate Nobby Stiles. It can therefore be concluded that the jersey being offered here is Alan Ball's unworn 1966 World Cup spare.
