Alex Stepney's Manchester United 1968 European Cup winner's medal, a .750 continental gold medal by Peka, inscribed COUPE DES CLUBS CHAMPIONS EUROPEENS, the reverse inscribed VAINQUEUR, 1968, ALEX STEPNEY, 38 by 20mm. In 1968 Matt Busby's Manchester United became the first English team to win the European Cup defeating Portuguese champions Benfica 4-1 after extra time. The win marked the culmination of Manchester United rebuilding the team after the Munich Air Disaster 10 years earlier. The United goalkeeper Alex Stepney made a crucial save when one-on-one with Eusebio to enable the match to go into the extra period with the scores deadlocked at 1-1. South Londoner Stepney began his career at Mill wall before moving to Manchester United after a brief spell at Stamford Bridge. He made a total of 433 appearances for United between 1966 and 1978, before ending his career with Dallas Tornado. Stepney also won a single England international cap at a time of intense competition for the 'keeper's slot.
