A Blackpool FC commissioned 9ct. gold medal commemorating the 1948 F.A. Cup final and presented to their player Ronald Suart who missed the match through injury, struck with a footballer and inscribed THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION CHALLENGE CUP, RUNNERS-UP, R.SUART, BLACKPOOL F.C., 24TH APRIL 1948 Appendix Ronald Suart (lots 708 to 710) Ronald Suart was born in Barrow-in-Furness in 1920. His professional football career started late due to the war, signing forms for Blackpool in 1946. He was a regular in the team playing alongside fellow defenders George Farrow and Harry Johnston. Unfortunately an injury prevented him appearing in the 1948 F.A. Cup final versus Manchester United. Suart moved to Blackburn Rovers in 1949 and played at Ewood Park until his retirement in 1955. Ron Suart then embarked on a managerial career stating at Wigan Athletic before guiding Scunthorpe United to the Division Three (North) title in season 1957-58. This achievement attracted the attention of his old Club Blackpool where he returned to lead them in top-flight football for eight seasons and reaching a League Cup semi-final in 1962. While at Bloomfield Road he helped to develop the talents of three future England internationals Alan Ball, Ray Charnley and Emlyn Hughes. Suart resigned from his post in 1967 and became assistant manager to Tommy Docherty at Chelsea. When Dave Sexton was sacked in October 1974 after a poor start, Suart was promoted to first-team manager but was unable to turn around the fortunes of the Blues and replaced by Eddie McCreadie the following April. Suart's final appointment before retirement from the game was as a scout for Wimbledon.
