Isaac J. Cullin (op.1881-1920) JOCKEY CLUB STAKES 1912 signed & dated 1912, inscribed JOCKEY CLUB STAKES 1912, PRINCE PALATINE 10ST. 7LB. F 'ONEILL UP, STEDFAST 9ST 8LB. F.WOOTTON UP, ADAMITE 9ST. MAHER UP, watercolour, framed & glazed, 27 by 37cm., 10 1/4 by 14 1/4in. Prince Palatine was bred at Tully but sold as a yearling for ?2,000 in a private deal to Mr Pilkington. It proved a fine purchase as the colt won the St Leger and two Ascot Gold Cups and was then bought by Jack Joel for ?40,000. In all Prince Palatine recorded 11 victories. Tragically, he died in a fire in the USA in 1920 where he had been standing as a stallion. Lord Wavertree later wrote that when Pilkington had asked if the horse was for sale he quoted him ?2,000 not thinking for a minute that he would pay that price.
