A film of the 1938 Grand National, the Kodak metal can 10in. in diameter with a paper label for Film Laboratories Ltd., Wardour Street, London, inscribed in ink THE GRAND NATIONAL - 1938 The 1938 Grand National was won by the American owned 40-1 shot Battleship. He was an entire son of the US flat racing legend Man o'War bred by Mr Walter J. Salmon jnr. at Mereworth Farm, Lexington, Kentucky. Battleship was bred for flat racing and at 15.2 hands is the smallest horse ever to win the Grand National. He was owned by the Marion duPont Scott, wife of Randolph Scott, the Hollywood film actor famed for his cowboy screen roles. His jockey Bruce Hobbs was only 17 when he won the race, the youngest rider ever to have won the Aintree race. Battleship stood as a stallion at Mrs duPont Scott's Montpelier estate stud and sired 58 foals, notably War Battle, Shipboard and Sea Legs who all became American steeplechase champions. not illustrated
