Alex James's leaving present from Arsenal FC in 1937, in the form of a gold pocket barometer altimeter by Short & Mason of London, No. I 3534, in a customised case, the lining printed in gilt with the Arsenal 'gunners' crest Alex James (1901-1953) is regarded as one Arsenal's greatest players of all time. The Scot was an inside forward and supporting player for the two main strikers. He was famed for the excellent quality of his passing and supreme ball control, leading many modern-day comparisons with Arsenal forward Dennis Bergkamp. His rheumatism meant he wore ''baggy'' shorts to hide the long johns he wore to keep warm. This baggy appearance became his trademark.
