Four early 1930s S.S. Car Club prize tankards, all silvered, one half pint sized bearing a raised S.S. emblem with superimposed Scottish lion motif and engraved SPEED EVENT 1934 2ND PRIZE UNLIMITED E.J.BOYD, another pint sized bearing a raised Motor Cycling Club four-shield crest and engraved LONDON-EDINBURGH 1933 E.J.BOYD - CAR; together with two similar pint sized tankards engraved PREMIER AWARD S.S.C.C. SPRING HALF-DAY OVER 1500 C.C. E.J.BOYD 1932-33 and S.S.C.C. PREMIER AWARD EDINBURGH HALF-DAY TRIAL OVER 1500 C.C. E.J.BOYD 1934, the half pint measuring 9cm., 3? in. high and 7.5cm., 3in. in diameter, the pints 11.5cm., 4?in. high and 9cm., 3?in. high (4) S.S. cars were forerunners of the famous Jaguar marque, the initials standing for either Swallow Sidecars or Standard Swallow, depending on the model. Then in 1935 the S.S. 'Jaguar' model was introduced and thereafter, partly due to the political correctness of the times, the model designation was soon given greater prominence. S.S. cars offered style and performance at an affordable price and Eric J. Boyd drove an early model to some success. In 1933 he completed the famous London to Edinburgh Trial and was sufficiently impressed to order one of the first S.S. 90 models to be produced in 1935.
