1951 Watkins Glen Grand Prix programme, the international race for sports cars held on 14-15th September in the U.S.A., covers in good condition; sold with two pre-war U.S. motorcycle race meeting programmes: State Fair Park, Milwaukee, 17th August 1940 and Illinois State Fair, Springfield, 23rd August 1940; the lot also including a British bronze and enamel medal plaque inscribed AUTO CYCLE UNION 1903, NATIONAL RALLY, G.A.GREEN, in its original fitted case (4) Watkins Glen was originally a narrow 6.6-mile road course that ran through the village and out into the beautiful surrounding upper New York State countryside. Although it included a level crossing and required a permit from the New York Central Railroad to halt the local train service during races, it was used once a year from 1948 to 1952. The area remains largely unchanged since those postwar days and will host a retrospective event in October to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its involvement with motor sport.
