A 9ct. gold F.A. Cup winner's medal 1946-47, inscribed THE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION, CHALLENGE CUP, WINNERS, CHARLTON ATHLETIC F.C., 1947, D. WELSH, CAPTAIN In the 1947 F.A. Cup final Charlton defeated Burnley 1-0. Lots 65 and 66 Don Welsh (Charlton Athletic captain) Donald Welsh was born in Manchester 25th February 1911. He turned professional while at Torquay in July 1934 and joined Charlton Athletic for ?3,250 in February 1935. Welsh was a great utility player and expert in the roles of centre and left-half, centre-forward or inside-left where he put his athletic physique to great advantage. He won a total of 3 England international caps in 1938 and 1939 and played in eight Wartime internationals. He also represented the Football League on one occasion. Welsh played in both of Charlton's F.A. Cup finals immediately after the War in 1946 and 1947, and as captain lifted the trophy aloft on the latter occasion. He later moved into management and had spells with Brighton, Liverpool, Bournemouth & Wycombe.
