The FIFA 1970 World Cup winner's medal awarded to Brazil's Everaldo Marques da Silva, in .750 continental gold, signed Peka, the obverse inscribed F.I.F.A., the reverse inscribed CAMPEONATO MUNDIAL DE FUTBOL, COPA JULES RIMET, MEXICO, 1970 In winning the Jules Rimet Trophy for the third time the Brazilian team of 1970 made history in doing so and produced some of the most breathtaking football ever seem. Arguably 'the team of the century,' Marion Zagalo's Brazilians defeated Italy 4-1 in the World Cup final played at the Azteca Stadium, Mexico City, on 21st June 1970. Everaldo Marques de Silva, squad number 16, played in every Brazil game during the tournament with the exception of the quarter-final v Peru. Known simply as Everaldo, the left-sided defender was born 11th September 1944 in Porto Alegre and played his club football for Gremio. The golden star in Gremio's club flag was added in 1970 in homage of his part in the World Cup victory. Everaldo won a total of 29 international caps between 1967 and 1972 and appeared on a losing Brazilian side on just one occasion during his career in October 1968. Other career honours included the award of the Brazilian Silver Ball in 1970, winner of the Roca Cup with Brazil in 1967, winner of the Campeonato Gaucho in 1964, 1966, 1967 & 1968 with Gremio and winner of the Rio Branco Cup in 1967 also with Gremio. Tragically the Brazilian World Cup winner died young, through fatal injuries sustained in a car crash driving his Dodge Dart near Santa Cruz do Sul on 28th October 1974.
