Steve Smith's one and only England international cap v Scotland 1895, purple velvet with wirework inscription APPENDIX Steve Smith (Aston Villa, Portsmouth, New Brompton and England) Lots 10 to 22 Steve Smith was born at Abbots Bromley in Staffordshire on 14th January 1874. The outside-left was squat in build, but moved with great speed and was an accurate passer. He joined Aston Villa in 1893 where he won four Championship and two F.A. Cup winner's medals. Smith scored 42 goals for Villa in 184 League and Cup appearances. He only played once for England, against Scotland in 1895, and scored in the 3-0 win. Smith joined Portsmouth in 1901 and helped them win the Southern League Championship in his first season. He finished his career at New Brompton (Gillingham) where he was player manager. He died in May 1935. His son Steve jnr was a professional footballer in the 1920s.
