A 15ct. gold-mounted presentation riding whip, hallmarked London, 1873, maker's initials of TJ, the leather handle mounted with a gold ferrule, terminal and bands with various inscriptions relating to the presentation of this whip from an owner to his jockey commemorating victories in hurdle races at Cheltenham, Worcester & Wolverhampton in 1875, 89cm., 35in. This whip was presented by the racehorse owner Mr J.F. Liebert to his jockey Mr J. Goodwin to commemorate the victories of the hurdlers Jack Bragg and Lady Adza. Jack Bragg won a mile-and-a-half maiden hurdle at Cheltenham on 2nd April 1875. Cheltenham's national hunt course was situated at this time on ground in Prestbury that is now covered by the crematorium. Goodwin also rode Jack Bragg to victory in a 2 mile handicap hurdle at Worcester on 2nd November 1875. Lady Adza's victory came in a two mile hunters' hurdle race at Wolverhampton on 15th April 1875. Interestingly, the race finished as a dead-heat with Lady Adza emerging triumphant in the subsequent run-off.
