The Dum Dum Golfing Club Handicap Cup of 1831, an early example of a golfing trophy in the form of a hallmarked silver cup and cover of campana form with grape and vine and other decoration, a plain band on the body inscribed GOLF HANDICAP CUP, GIVEN BY ANDREW WIGHT ESQ. AND PLAYED FOR OVER THE DUM DUM LINKS ON 22ND JAN. 1831, WON BY CAPTAIN CHARLES GRAHAM B.H.A., IN 72 STROKES BEATING ELEVEN COMPETITORS, height 27cm., 10 1/2in., weight 1,183gr., 38oz. 0dwt. The Dum Dum Golfing club was formed in 1829 and is the oldest golf course in the world outside of the British Isles, and older than a good deal of historic British clubs. It was later re-named the Calcutta Golf Club, and later still in 1911 the Royal Calcutta, following a visit by King George V and Queen Mary who conferred the title.
