He signed for Manchester United on leaving school in 1955 and played in the Youth team as a right-winger. During the fateful 1957-58 season he established a place in the first-team at the expense of Johnny Berry. He played in the European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade and the 18 years old survived the Munich Air Disaster with only minor physical injuries. He left Manchester United shortly afterwards having made just 23 first-team appearances. A similar blazer from 1958 is in the Manchester United Museum Collection.
