A silver trophy presented by Steve Donoghue in 1926, a two-handled cup hallmarked London, 1925, maker's mark of R.P., inscribed PRESENTED BY STEVE DONOGHUE ESQ., ENGLAND'S FAMOUS JOCKEY, 11ST. 4LBS. OPEN NOVICES COMPETITION, 4TH JANUARY 1926, WINNER, on an ebonised plinth, height 17.5cm., 7in., weight 423gr., 13oz. 12dwt. Steve Donoghue was Champion Jockey for ten years in succession from 1914 to 1923, and won the Derby on six occasions. From the trophy inscription where Donoghue is referred to as 'England's famous jockey, it can be presumed that the competition was held overseas. Being January, this would also point to somewhere with a reasonably hot climate at that time of year. As such it is likely to have been a colonial sporting occasion, most probably in India. Donoghue had been to India to ride at Calcutta during the 1923-24 season and may well have endorsed an event for which he provided an annual cup thereafter.
