A racing plate worn by Sainfoin when winning the 1890 Derby, set on a wooden shield-shaped backboard and enclosing an oil painting of Sainfoin, signed J.A. Conway & dated 1900, above a metal plaque inscribed WORN BY SANFOIN [sic], DERBY WINNER, 1890, height 22cm., 8 1/2in. Sainfoin was a chestnut colt foaled in 1887 by Springfield out of Sanda. In addition to his 1890 Derby success, he won three other races comprising the Astley Stakes at Lewes, the Esher Stakes at Sandown and the Dee Stakes at Chester. As a stallion he sired Rock Sand, the first of only three horses who won the Triple Crown in the 20th century, the others being Bahram and Nijinsky. Sainfoin was owned by Sir James Miller, trained at Kingsclere by John Porter and ridden in the Derby by the royal jockey Jack Watts.
