Alfred Bright (op. 1880-1929) DUTCH OVEN signed, titled & dated Wentworth 1887, en grisaille, 29 by 43cm., 11 1/2 by 17in. Dutch Oven was a brown filly foaled in 1879 by Dutch Skater out of Cantiniere. The highlight of her immensely successful career was the victory in the 1882 St Leger. She was owned by Lord Falmouth, trained at the Heath House Stables at Newmarket by Mat Dawson and ridden by the legendary jockey Fred Archer. The filly won 15 other races. Bright painted Dutch Oven in 1887 when she was an eight-year-old broodmare at Lord Fitzwilliam's Wentworth Woodhouse Stud in south Yorkshire.
