A 15ct. gold F.A. Cup winner's medal 1911-12, inscribed 1912, ENGLISH CUP, WINNERS, BARNSLEY F.C., G.E. TRAVERS The 1912 F.A. Cup was won by Barnsley in a replay at Bramall Lane. The final tie at The Crystal Palace ended in a 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion after extra time. The replay also went to extra time wit the deadlock being broken in the 118th minute by Barnsley's Tufnell. The victory still remains the greatest triumph in the 'Tykes' history. They had reached the final in 1901 losing in a replay to Newcastle United at Goodison Park. The present medal was won by Barnsley's forward George Travers. George Travers was born at Newtown, Birmingham, on 4th November 1888. The much travelled inside-forward played for a great variety of League and non-League clubs either side of the Great War. He arrived at Barnsley in 1911 via Bilston United, Rowley United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Birmingham, Aston Villa, QPR & Leicester Fosse. Travers made a total of 84 League appearances for the 'Tykes' and scored 21 goals. He was transferred to Manchester United in 1914 and later played for Swindon Town, Millwall Athletic, Norwich City, Gillingham, Nuneaton Town, Cradley Heath St. Lukes and Bilston United. George Travers died 31st August 1946.
