The 1959 Whitbread Gold Cup, a silver-gilt two-handled trophy cup & cover, hallmarked London 1958, inscribed THE WHITBREAD GOLD CUP, SNADOWN PARK, 25TH APRIL 1959, on a turned wooden base set with a R.B.L. ownership plaque, height 32cm., 12 1/2in., weight 90oz., 2,800 gr. (3) The Whitbread Gold Cup was Britain's first commercially sponsored race and was first run at Sandown Park in 1957. The 1959 renewal was won by Mr J Baillie's Done Up, trained by H R Price and ridden by H Sprague. The runner-up was the popular chaser Mandarin.
