The world famous Ascot Racecourse chiming tower clockworks by J. B. Joyce & Co., Whitchurch, dated 1896, the massive cast iron three train movement signed and dated on the setting dial JOYCE, WHITCHURCH, SHROPSHIRE, 1896, double three leg gravity escapement with 9ft. pendulum, maintaining power, chiming and striking on a set of five bells; with the four cast iron dials, hands, motion work and the weather vane, the hour bell inscribed THE FIVE BELLS CAST IN 1895 BY JAMES BARWELL, BIRMINGHAM, WERE RECAST IN 1960 BY MEARS & STAINBANK, dials 265.5cm., 104 1/2in. (8ft. 8 1/2in.) This clock was supplied to Ascot Racecourse and fitted by the firm of J. B. Joyce of Whitchurch in 1896. This magnificent turret clock has been the abiding feature of the Ascot skyline during the reign of six monarchs. In 1960, the original clock tower was replaced, the clock movement was restored and the bells re-cast and installed in the new tower above the Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand, opened in 1961. The movement is now fitted with three electric auto-winding motors.
