A silver shoe horn, hallmarked London, 1882, inscribed TRISTAN, ASCOT, 1882, fitted with a metal lace hook, 21cm., 8 1/4 in. Tristan was a bay colt foaled in 1878 by Hermit out of Thrift. In a superb career he won 29 of his 52 starts, including 4 victories in France. His important wins in England include the Gold Cup at Ascot, two victories in the Champion Stakes, a hat-trick in the Hardwicke Stakes and a marked drop down in distance to win the six furlongs July Cup. The present object commemorates another of Tristan's incredible achievements. In 1882 the four-year-old won no less than three races during Royal Ascot, namely the Gold Vase, the New Biennial Stakes & the Hardwicke Stakes.
