William Townley: a red England v Ireland international cap, 1890, sold with a period mounted photograph of the 1890 Blackburn Rovers Cup team (including Townley) with printed legend (2) Footnote This cap was acquired through the Townley family. Curiously, the colour of the cap is red - players in the Ireland match usually received a white cap. The only explanation that can be offered is the highly unusual circumstances of the England home internationals of March 1890. The F.A. selected 22 players to play against Ireland and Wales in internationals held on the same day, 15th March. The Welsh match was at Wrexham and the Ireland game was in Belfast. Perhaps just one colour cap was produced for the day? Townley, and four of his Blackburn team-mates were selected for the Ireland game, a match England won 9-1.
