William Bassett's purple England v Scotland international cap 1889-1896, an early and unusual England cap with multiple year and season inscriptions in gold wire work, 90-91, 92-93 & 94-95, with the peak bearing what appears to be a summary 1889-1896 William Bassett played in each of the eight annual England v Scotland international fixtures between seasons 1888-89 and 1895-96. The West Bromwich Albion player won a total of 16 England caps altogether, a very good tally for the period, mainly due to the fact that he was peerless as an outside right where he was renowned for hugging the touch line, beating defenders and delivering pinpoint centres. Billy Bassett also won two F.A. Cup winner's medals with WBA. William Isiah Bassett was born at West Bromwich 27th January 1869. Billy was involved in football and cricket in the West Bromwich Albion throughout his days. He was chairman of West Brom from 1908 till his death in 1937, and was also a FA Council member from 1930 and an important administrator on the Football League Management Committee for the same period.
